Opposite St. Nicholas Church stands the Black Horse Inn, once an old coaching station and smithy. The history of the Inn can be traced back to the year 1700 when it was occupied by John Merriman who died on November 21st 1739 and was buried in the churchyard. The Inn passed on from father to son, all named Merriman for more than 160 years, through four generations. In addition to being landlord, all were blacksmiths.
