Vera Oxley gave me a cutting from the Sunderland Echo  dated Wednesday March 27 1968 . Here are a few extracts from the cutting.

"The demolition squad moved into Boldon Colliery this week for slum clearance work was today pulling down some of the houses at the Coronation Park  end of West Terrace.

The Coal Board houses in part of Church Street and Front Street are also eventually to come down and the Council is entering into negotiations with the Board for the acquisition of the cleared sites so that they can be re-developed."

SITES FOR TIPPING

Nine sites in the Boldon area have been suggested as dumps on which residents may tip refuse which is not normally collected by the Council.

Subject to the consent of the County Planning Officer, Boldon Health Committee has decided that the sites be established under the provisions of the Civic Amenities Act 1967.

They are to be situated at Marsden Avenue, Whitburn Colliery; Cedar Grove garage site, Whitburn; Rackly Way allotments, Whitburn; Cleadon Park, Laburnum Grove entrance Cleadon;  Grange Park entrance, off North Road, East Boldon; Council Depot, Cleadon Lane, East Boldon; Council Housing Depot of Hardie Drive, West Boldon ; Wilfred Street garage site, Boldon Colliery and Old Fire Station, Boldon Colliery.

She just had to open a shop.

A new antique shop which adds to the character of East Boldon, was opened at the weekend by Mrs Joyce Rouse. Mrs Rouse has been forced into the business because she could hardly move in her own home. Her collection of china, glass and Victorian oddments grew and grew until it was a case of moving house or opening a shop. Mrs Rouse of Ravensbourne Avenue has taken a room in a cottage on the Newcastle-Sunderland Road , East Boldon., and so far villagers and outsiders have shown a great interest.

WARM AIR FOR HEATING FLATS

Electric warm air units are to be used for the heating of the aged persons flatlet scheme at Croftside Estate, Whitburn, Boldon Council Housing Committee has decided.

The Committee also decided that the proposal to install two central meters for the supply of electricity for heating and domestic purposes as suggested by the Treasurer be approved and that the total charges for the electricity be met as part of the rent.

Vandalism at closed church

Vandals have struck again in Boldon Colliery this time smashing nearly all the windows of the Ebeneza Methodist Church which was closed some time ago.

The Church was closed after it was found that it would cost too much to repair damage to woodwork and the parishioners moved to another church farther up the road.

About two weeks ago vandals smashed windows in empty houses in Church Street and windows were also broken at the Welfare Ground.

On the reverse side of the cutting is a Ruling that would not be accepted today which you may find interesting:

PARENTAGE RULING BARS WEARSIDER.

An application by a 44 year old Sunderland man to join the Sunderland Fellowship of the Services has been turned down because his grandfather was German. Mr Charles Schakel, a draymen of Chester Road who served in the Royal Marines during the war , has applied several times to join the organization.

A spokesman for the Fellowship said that in the original articles of association there was a rule stating that anyone with a foreign paternal grandfather could not join.
