Hello, I wondered if anyone knew anything about my Mothers family. My mum was Evelyn Burgham daughter of Sarah and William Burgham, William was a miner, Sarah was instrumental in getting a roman catholic church built in the area. My mum died in 2006 and I would love to find out more about her childhood.

Thank you.

........  Bernie

Grandma Burgham was Sarah Ann who died on 4th May 1954 aged 77 her maiden name was Dillon, Grandad was William Ernest who died on 27th May 1949 aged 75 years, both are buried in a churchyard in the area of Boldon.

My mother was born on 21st June 1918 at their address at that time was 132 Arnold Street, Bolden Colliery.  Grandma and Grandad were married at St Peter and St Pauls Church at Tyne Dock on 12 June 1900.
Mum was in the Wrens duing the war, her home address then was shown as being 52 Wilfred Street.

My Mum had one brother, Ernest who emigrated to America when she was a young girl, they lost touch and she never found out what happened to him despite numerous attempts to find him, we presume he died.  My dad told me (just before he died which was 10 months after mum) that Ernest may have used his mothers maiden name in America as hers was an Irish surname and immigrants to America often had a better chance of getting work if they were or appeared to be irish.

Mum also had 3 sisters - all older than her, Winifred born 16th March 1905 and Nora (I don't know her date of birth) both of them died of diptheria as babies, another sister Edith was born on 20th April 1907.  At the time of their deaths, both Grandma and Grandad were living in the Aged Miners Homes at Hedworth? (its hard to make out the writing on the death certificate).
