Being a mining area , many of the recruits were local miners from Boldon Colliery. Devoted and loyal pit men, it was only natural that they would wish to defend there "patch ".

The home guard was a British reserve establishment consisting mainly of men who were too old for regular military service. Trained locally , they were to be Britain's last line of defence in the event of invasion, defending each village and town as the Germans approached and acting as guerillas in occupied territory. I wonder if they operated after the war because the men in this photograph appear to be quite young.

Do you have any memories of the home guard that you would like to share with us.
